Insights I gained by climbing

I started climbing 2 weeks ago and here are some insights I gained that can be translated into 5 life lessons:

  1. Try not to look down until you get to your objective. I always thought highs didn’t scared me; however, when climbing even a few meters above the ground, if I looked down, I panicked, I couldn’t neither continue climbing, nor leave the wall, I just paralized. Therefore, try not to look down (or back in life) when you haven’t reached your goal, it might only distract you.
  2. Instead, focus on 2 things: first, focus on your objective (when climbing, you must focus on reaching the top). Second, focus on your strategy or next move. While climbing, I noticed that I didn’t have to plan from the very starting point all the route I would follow to get to the top, rather, just by planning my immediate next move from wherever I was positioned, it allowed me to continue moving forward.
  3. You have to train/prepare to achieve your goal. On the way, you’ll have to be strong -in mind and body; flexible and adaptive to the situations; decisive and agile to move fast whenever you find necessary, all of these before burning your arms, wasting too much energy before time or getting distracted.
  4. You have to trust. Yes, you have to trust, first: in yourself, that you will achieve your goal and that you give a proper secondary quality control before starting. Also, you have to trust your colleagues (when climbing, trust your asurer). You also have to trust your equipment, yes, as akward as this may sound, it really happened to me, at first, I didn’t trust the rope, nor the climbing shoes, nor my assurer. And ok, not blindly, but TRUST and you’ll be surprised when you get the most of them.
  5. Enjoy the climb! I realized that when a song I liked started in the background, I just lost myself and continued climbing as if it was natural, without too much thought, it just flowed. So, enjoy, have a good time along the road!
